A Short 🧵 about My Creative Process as an Art Director

A Short 🧵 about My Creative Process as an Aspiring AD

As an aspiring art director, my creative process is a vital part of my work. It is a combination of imagination, experimentation, and critical thinking that helps me bring ideas to life. From conceptualizing a project to executing it, my creative process is a journey that involves exploring different mediums, techniques, and styles.

Through this process, I am able to create unique, impactful, and meaningful work that resonates with my audience. In this essay, I will be sharing my creative process and how it has shaped my approach to art direction.

Orientation: The very first thing I like to do that usually serves as a precursor to a project is to write an article detailing my experience/interaction with a brand. As you may have noticed, almost every project of mine includes an article.

Personally, I like to take photos and write about my experience, but you might prefer to take a B-roll video and do a voiceover. Either is fine.

This is a crucial first step as it documents your initial thoughts, reaction, and perspective on a brand. These are key ingredients that you will need to draw back on when ideating.

Ideation: Once documented, I may then decide to do a project, in which case I will likely browse Fiverr and look at my Instagram bookmarks for inspiration.

Illumination: After scrolling through Fiverr and Instagram, I brainstorm different ideas in my head for several days. Often my “home run” idea comes to me late at night as I pace around my bed.

Synthesis: Once I have the "home run" idea, I will find an artist on Fiverr who can best execute my idea. I like Fiverr because it's crawling with new, ambitious freelancers eager to produce quality work at an affordable cost.

I then use my writing skills to clearly articulate my vision to the artist. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to work with some very talented Fiverr artists and have formed working relationships with several of them.

Once you have your content, you can then distribute it across different media channels. Don't forget that the content must be contextual to the platform!

That’s my creative process! I hope you found this helpful!
